How to Make Fabric Twine | Scrap-Busting DIY with Laura Muir of Create Joy Project

Ready to turn your fabric scraps into something truly special? Laura Muir from Create Joy Project has an amazing tutorial for making your own fabric twine (or rope). This fun, simple project is not only a great way to use up leftover fabric but also creates a versatile material for crafting. Read on (or check out the video tutorial below) for the supplies, step-by-step instructions, and creative uses for your fabric twine!

Supplies Needed

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Fabric scraps (cotton works great, but feel free to experiment with other types)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • A cutting mat (optional, but helpful for straight cuts)
  • A safety pin or clip (optional, for securing during twisting)
  • Your hands and creativity!

How to Make Fabric Twine

Follow these simple steps to transform your fabric scraps into beautiful, handmade twine.

  1. Prepare Your Fabric:

    • Gather fabric scraps and cut them into strips in desired widght and length. The width needs to stay uniform. In the video tutorial above, Laura is using 1.5" strips. Don’t worry about perfectly even cuts; the variety adds character to your twine.
    • If your scraps are short, you can knot strips together to create longer pieces.
  2. Start Twisting:

    • Take two strips of fabric and overlap the ends slightly. Twist each strip individually in the same direction (clockwise).
    • Cross the twisted strips over each other in the opposite direction (counterclockwise). This keeps the twine secure and prevents unraveling.
  3. Add More Strips:

    • When you near the end of a strip, overlap a new piece of fabric onto the end of the old one. Continue twisting and crossing as before.
    • The knots or overlaps will blend seamlessly into the twine.
  4. Secure the Ends:

    • When you’re finished, tie a small knot at the ends to prevent the twine from unraveling.

Creative Ways to Use Fabric Twine

Fabric twine is not only beautiful but incredibly versatile. Here are some ideas for what you can make with it:

Home Decor:

  • Use the twine to create coiled baskets, trivets, or placemats.
  • Wrap it around jars, vases, or planters for a rustic, handmade look.

Gift Wrapping:

  • Swap out traditional ribbon for fabric twine to add a unique touch to your presents.

Accessories:

  • Braid or coil the twine to make bracelets, necklaces, or keychains.

Sewing Projects:

  • Incorporate the twine into quilt designs or use it as decorative piping.

Seasonal Crafts:

  • Make holiday ornaments, wreaths, or garlands.
