Summer Plans Quilt

Hello, friends! I'm Kairle Oaks of Handcrafted Goodness. It's that time of year in Utah when we have had enough of winter and we're thinking ahead to warm summer days. I'm ready to get outside in the garden and plant flowers that will bring bright, happy colors to my drab landscape.

This fun buzz-saw quilt, made in "Grunge Hits the Spot" by BasicGrey, has me feeling all sorts of warm, sunny thoughts! I made my first buzz-saw quilt many years ago while participating in a small local quilt guild. I've revisited this simple traditional block several times, and I'm excited to share it with you today.

This quilt finishes at 55" x 66".

1 Fat Quarter Bundle  {Grunge Hits the Spot by BasicGrey}
2 yards background fabric
4 yards backing fabric {Meraki Desta Wren 90494-12}
1/2 yard binding fabric

Choose 15 fat quarters. From each fat quarter, cut:

  • Four (4) 6.5" squares
  • Eight (8) 6"x 2" strips

From background fabric, cut:

  • Ten (10) 6.5" x Width of Fabric strips
  • Subcut into sixty (60) 6.5" x 6.5" squares

To make TWO sections, you will need the following pieces.

Make two half-square triangles by drawing a diagonal line on the background piece. Place the two squares right sides together. Sew 1/4" from each side of the line. Separate by cutting on the line, then press each half-square triangle to the dark side. Trim to 6" square.

NOTE: This next step is very important! Make sure that every half-square triangle is positioned as shown, with the dark piece of the triangle in the lower right-hand corner.

Cut each square into four (4) 1-1/2" pieces, as shown.

Rearrange the pieces as shown below, adding one 2"x6" piece on the left side.

Stitch together and press. Each section should measure 6" square.

Arrange four sections to make one buzz-saw block. Make 30 blocks.

Arrange buzz-saw blocks five (5) across and six (6) down. Sew together.

Quilt and bind as desired.

Quilted by Utah Valley Quilting.

This quilt finishes at 55" x 66".

I hope that this quilt has you thinking about your summer plans, whether it be gardening, quilting, or just soaking up some much needed sun! Please check out the other projects that are keeping me busy this winter on my Instagram account or on my blog! Happy quilting!
